Martin's submission notes:
My capture...
What was once standard fare for young boys growing up in
middle class families of playing footy in winter, cricket in
summer has in eroded in recent times, with other secular
pastimes and electronic gizmos taking a firm grip over our
evolving and less energetic youth.
Mums and Dads the world over see the all too real shift away
from what was considered a right of passage, to something
only the keen, or gifted spend their time embracing. Sport -
the ultimate physical and mental challenge.
Two such gifted young boys from Brookwater have unwittingly
reshaped an evolving paradigm amongst the young and not
so young. Saturdays are once again time to get in the car and
embrace competition, celebrate victory and be humble and
gracious in defeat.
Sam Batiste and Hutton Buckingham; two mates from the St
Peters Lutheran College at Springfield go about their
business with little fanfare. The boys provided the engine for
the Greater Springfield Storm AFL Under 10s this year,
inspiring many first timers to try out the game, and providing
many OMG moments on the field with their class and prowess.
The boys just thought they were having fun. The talent scouts
saw more than fun. They saw something special. They saw
these boys as the real deal...... Champions in the making.
Mums and Dads of course agreed.
Then the AFL season was over. Then Cricket season began,
The inseparable pairing teamed up once again for the
University of Queensland Under 10s. A very different game is
Cricket. Somewhat individual in nature. Not much fun if you
are.nt bowling or batting when you are nine years old? With
six catches and 5 run outs between them already this season,
you wont ever see them staring off into space in the field.
Under 10s play a modified 20/20 game in Queensland. You
face thirty balls and you must retire, and everyone gets to
bowl. They even use a hard ball and love wearing their
helmets.
Today the UQ side put up a valiant effort to just pip Kenmore
by 6 runs at the historic Gregory Park in Milton. The area was
inundated by the 2011 floods and struggled for funding to
re-establish facilities. Today it is hampered ironically by the
lack of rain falling in South West Queensland, no grass stains
on the whites for mum to wash out though.

Sean's Pick - and comments: "Formidable Duo"
I am liking your approach with this simple yet well written piece most suitable for the
sports column of the local paper.
Great portrait shot of the Formidable Duo gets it for me and takes me back to the days
of twin scoops and spin bowling.. Good even soft light.
Could have done with some more action in the shots - but nice ball grab!
Other image notes:
- Sam Batiste, Good crop and shutter work, could do with more contrast
- Hutton Buckingham, Nice pose, that yellowness is a bit overpowering though
- The Crowd, I see the light was real hot - silhouettes work but the middle
person's outline what the hell is going on.
Sean's Submission notes:
Rideyo - first as usual..
I hit the Cairns on foot and headed
to the Esplanade (at the late startof
15:58hrs) from where I was
fortunate to come across a "Fun in
the Sun Festival"
My notes are: "Fun in the sun" for
kids and parents on Saturday, with
rides, stage events and even a mini
farm almost all of Cairns made it
down to the Cairns Esplanade to
enjoy the beautiful weather and
community spirit of the city together.
Images, (Cover Fun in the Sun,
Happy times, Mini Farm) All
cropped and processed raw files
Knowing your 3 image submission
criteria a fair swag hit the bin and
well after a few laps and a lens
change I wanted another venue.
Running out of time I headed over
to the adjacent Reef Terminal for
some interaction (16:50hrs).
Thinking for some form of
controversial topic I came across
the weathered feature sign of the
"Reef Fleet Terminal" where all of
the reef charters came come back
around this time. I thought it is a
shame that people easily complain
about the tourist season being
down however do not put any value
or care into the most important
things like sharp, clean, bold, new
"wow factor" advertising and
marketing.
Subs: (Cover No Maintenance -
processed HDR for increased gritty
boldness - , Tourists1 & Tourist 2
all little crop except tourist 2 - raw
adjustments as required)
These three images are for the
editor to come up with some edgey
story around this local issue under
the guise that "look we don't even
care and you still come to see us"
sort of thing. Controversial yes but
in the case the first sub didn't cut it
I thought I would give you this too.
(17:12hrs) Pier Bar refreshment -
job done.. (iPhone)
Where the hell are my subs for this
month, last month, evals,
tasters??????
Martin's topic brief
OK OK – topic for this month is
Journalism……. And here’s how
it goes. On Saturday 25th
October from 1500 until 1800
you are to capture a 3 images
on a subject worthy of page 5
(front of the paper) or the rear
of the paper (sports section) in
the Sunday local.
You know the drill. You are to
write a small section of notes
that the Editor can use to bring
the pictures to life and make it
newsworthy. Of course
Journalistic licence is
encouraged.
