NEXT MONTH TOPIC: The things around me!
|
Martin's submission notes:
Again first.
Had a lot of material to work with, had a
lot of material hit the cutting room floor.
Not very comfortable with my subs. Sure I
like em, but I wanted so much more. I
bear my soul to the Portrait guru.
All cropped, touched, desat and curves..
Martin's Pick - and comments: "Free Ride"
Oooooh yeah. Aside from topic there are 3 images which drip quality.... Alas I must be conscious of the task set and evaluate accordingly. The term
portrait no doubt is up for grabs as to what the finish product should represent. My take on it is that the subject and the lens are connected, there are
little distractions, and any distractions must only enhance the subject.
Winner for this month goes to Free Ride. Connection with the subject is total. The carrying vehicle is evident, complimentary only and plays the
perfect part in this shot. Midday lighting is handled well, and just enough f stop to allow me to see where the shot was taken. Sharp as always with that
24-70 methinks. Probably not a game changer to the uninitiated, but I think fellow photographers would appreciate the quality of this image and the
message it conveys.
Other images in order of merit:
- Horizons - Delicious. Brilliant selfie. Use on the front page of your site Braaaz.
- Wisdom - Yup. "Not another fuuuuxing photo"..... Great shot, great portrait in the 101 of portraiture ilk. Clinton got da bally.
- God Daughter - I bet this was a chuck out if colour. Mono makes this one - probably lacking a DOF, too closely cropped, blah blah - but this
for me still lives up here. One for the 18th Birthday Party.
- 1980s - Just a filler, but a good filler. Awkward lighting brings it to life. Insert human,
Still waiting for you to bring that girl of yours into the fray for a show stopper. C;mon babe!!!! Demand a little session time. You wont regret it.

Sean's Pick - and comments: "Rolf"
Rolf, Yep this one gets it, Nice natural pose, good
relaxed connection, subject looking down elevates the
impact. A little hot with the exposure on shirt but does
separate him from the darkness well. Perhaps would
have lost that girder and ducting in post?
Other images in order of merit:
- Player, like the pose and cross lighting you
have captured here, reminisit of an action hero
pose. Eye connection, exposure right on,
perhaps rear light to silletueette the head edge
would have lifted the player to a popped image.
- Natural, Yep like the movement and in
particular your exposure across the eyes and
bridge. Wacky dilated pupils and the black ¾
boarder frame pulls the focus in tight. Nice 1
- Siblings, mate I love this shot, I wish it was
sharp though, Adam family meets Buckingham
palace. Great crop – stuff it blow it up and print
on wall if you haven’t already.
- Jimmy, Nice awkward composition and
connection . As far as visual tension – “under a
ladder” is up there. Don’t mind the grittiness
“thumbs up” like Jimmy
- Veteran, Not if it’s the expression or the grainy
texture in this one that puts it down here. Did
you try and pull some focus back and over
done it in post?
- Patron, probably not one of your better ones,
soft exposure falls off to much into the blacks. I
think this shot if cropped tighter in on the face
with all that black background might have
worked better, or perhaps without the booze?
