NEXT MONTH SUBJECT: Colour! photography
set by Martin
Overall with weighting 8.05 / 10
Sean's Pick - score and comments:  "Dozer"

Ok nice sub this month, I guess coming back to our B&W roots is like a ctrl+alt+del and refreshes things a little.
Out of you lot I kept coming back to three to deliberate on that I consider stand outs - and well taken for different
reasons.

The selected in the end was
Dozer, I really like the composition,  subject detail and exposure all coming together
forming a moonscape alien planet.  The clouds could have been frozen with one of your brackets but hey their
movement strangely adds to the whole.

Other images in order of merit:

  • Astrid, really nicely exposed – you sure you didn’t process her skin? If not the foundation has really soften
the texture and the eye focus is bang on. I note a nostril is blemished slightly which could have been cloned
out but hey the pose and expression is well arranged. (but like you have mentioned in the past  “I have seen
plenty of these shots before” – namely on supermarket staff boards)

  • Shadow Profile: a nice almost Rembrandt portrait with that creative shadow offset to oneside. Skin a bit
washed out and ghost like and I would have loved to see a catch light in the eyes to fix attention. Good use
of background texture and angled shadow.

  • Splash: Not a bad fast shutter shot not sharp at the middle which would have put me in that water bowl a bit
better. Again good use of background interest adding to the shot. Would have loved to see more star bursts
    of light.

  • Bus  Stop: This shot has been overly cropped leaving me wanting more visually and I am not sure what the
intent is (no –buses?) I do like the use of folding subjects together and it does spawn ideas though

  • Brisbane Mill: One thing I note is HDR and vegetation don’t really work and with B&W they all mold together
adversely. The buildings in the background do pop and the mix of old and new taken from this advantage
spot does evoke a story. I just don’t think the grubby tones work here with this photo.

  • Tool & Atrium are down here as both don’t blow my hair back mate.

Overall - good work on the first few

Martin's photo notes:

Pfffft.... First as usual.

Not too much darkroom hijinks this
month. All shots cropped, desat and
curves.

Image notes:

  • Astrid - Reflection removed
    from glasses

  • Atrium - HDR

  • Brisbane Mill - 2 layers,
    sharpened

  • Bus Stop - Nil other

  • Dozer - HDR

  • Shadow Profile - Nil other

  • Splash - Sharpened

  • Tool - Nil other

Martin's Pick - score and comments:  "Christening"

Too easy. Christened takes the gong. This shot has it all technically, and it tells the viewer the story of what
happens to little Greek kids at their Christening. "Holy man takes kid from parents and dunks him / her in bucket of
cold holy water." Perfect for monochrome. No further questions.

Other shots in order of my merit:

  • Sally: Great capture. Crisp. Bokeh. DOF. Contrast. Again it's all happening. Which lens?

  • Blouses: I bet that was some pretty shitty lighting in there. Nicely bracketed and composed to make this a
really interesting and pleasing shot. Love the plate. Where's the Vendor?

  • Sharppan: Yeah it's sharp. Nicey exposure methinks. Print.

  • OtherSide: I like the point of view here, but a little more foreground may have framed it better. Not coming
up very sharp my end braaaaz.

  • Seafood: Would have liked a little more DOF to be able to at least identify all foods. 50mm @f2.0?

  • Spike-me: WTF?.. Looks like something from a medical journal. Nice contrast.

  • Boated: Nice capture, but I think at the wrong time of day as the light harshens the shot up. Nice textures.

  • Bonneville 750: Dunno.... Maybe to close? Maybe too shallow? Maybe a better background? Just not
    pressing my buttons here.

The rest of your Christening shots are also very good, bet the parents were pleased. Well done this month. You
are a monochromaniac.

Sean's photo notes:

Ok here is my lot for the month, I didn’t rely on the christening
shots taken mid month and did my usual hunting but by the end
I felt I needed to include at least one from the lot.

Some have no crop applied only where mentioned ok but
obviously destat and curves too

Photo comments:

  • Blouses, HDR

  • Boated, HDR

  • Bonneville 750 – HDR

  • Christened – slight dodge on Priest’s face, crop & frame,

  • Other side, HDR

  • Sally -crop and sharpen

  • Seafood – slight crop to right

  • Sharppan – crop, dodge and blur here and there

  • Spike me, HDR, crop
