NEXT MONTH SUBJECT:  Silhouette  Photography
set by Martin
Overall with weighting 7.90 / 10
Sean's Pick - score and comments:  "GTI"

Ok Ok – to be fair I needed a day or so to go over your submission this month I guess in ways I prefer looking and
experimenting in this style more than most others.

Not a bad bunch this month some good variety – I see some symmetry trending too.

Going up and down the corridors I would say the most appealing shot to me would be
GTI, I really like three things
about this shout, the compositional angle you shot from, the depths of field and the fact you lit your car with your
phone, all of which illustrates your vision to do so in advance.

I must say the lighting engineer on that building to the rear also deserves some credit!
The hint of stars also works but some glowing celestial light from the heavens would have knocked my socks off.
Number plate work also noted. Good job – would have worked on the commercial photography if you would have
to your VW badge in there too..

Other images in order of merit,

  • Variegated, those caladiums really work well with the lighting work on the building and I can see you have
exploited this shot in line with the landscape architect – pulling me down past the shops, a touch of
movement creating the gravity needed too. A little over exposed to the left and perhaps a tighter crop
taking some of the top off would have worked to balance the mirror effect of colour.

  • Ride, is quite punchy but the viewing angle and crop feel a bit chopped off or missing something, I love the
colour explosion happening on the back of my retinas and the relief of the distant moon, perhaps a
background star trail or over exposed milky way would have subdued the black hole behind. Did you play
with getting some of the movement of the ride in here? I wondered why you chose to keep that part static?

  • Slow down, I have seen this effect with my own ears after many beers – did you get your camera drunk?
The tones of this image to the left I really find interesting then after a while I feel giddy.. Like the creativity
    coming out but.

  • Concert: This alien beam has the attention of the crowd – it leaves me thinking what is going on and
perhaps too much is missing for my ideal liking.

  • City block: not a bad advantage point here bras, like the car movement , perhaps a bit too hot and cold in
places, did you bracket this shot?

  • Reflections, doest’t do it for me bro – the white balance is shot to pieces the mirrored column is a bit
    interesting though.

Martin's photo notes:

I tried my best for some variety this
month and leave out the stock NATO
light trail shots. Not much left for me
though.

Martin's Pick - score and comments:  "Phased Out"

Interesting bunch this month. My first impression was yippee no star / light trails!! And great variety of shots.....

Following a much more detailed perusal I really considered two shots to take the gong. I used the eval criteria on
both shots and the one that came out on top was Phased Out. This image, whilst far from technically superb has hit
topic very well, and is nicely composed and generally well exposed. The blazing moon detracts a little with the
aberrations, but adds a certain surreal aura - which the shot, as a whole, is really all about. The story behind the
capture also adds appeal, as does the timelapse. A big A for effort.

Other images in order of merit:

  • Music to my Ears: Has an almost tilt shift appearance. I like the composition drawing the eye into the central
two subjects which are nice and crisp. I am not so keen on the what appears to be the dashboard reflection
stripe however. This shot could be close cropped in landscape which I think would enhance the image.

  • Paranormal Activity: Liking the Jedi action here, and I think a good call to change the colour. Kudos to your
model for keeping still whilst you pounced around in your jocks waving that thing. Nicely exposed, but doesn't
    hit topic.

  • ST5: Hmmm... Nice lighting and contrast. Not very engaging though.

  • Welcome to Hell: Very National Geographic. Crisp, nice colour, but I am wondering what else is outside the
crop. I like it, but not this month as topic is not met.

  • Warp Speed: I just can't relate to this one. The diagonal exposure differential doesn't do it for me. Maybe if
the contrast was through the roof it would appeal more.

  • Part-Full: Sorry Braaaz. This image needed to be captured perfectly for me to even look twice at it...

I look forward to seeing what glory you can produce in June given that the topic is Silhouette.

"Ride"
Sean's photo notes:

Rideyo Man! Here are my lot

I didn’t bother chasing star trails this time around, to
be honest with either a full moon or clouds the
conditions here have not been ideal. All the same I
do enjoy revisiting this topic and feel there is still so
much to experiment with.

Ok Image notes;

  • Welcome to Hell: Complete black out in a
cave with spot lights, changed colour to
present you with a Hell like form exploiting the
    limestone & Cropped,

  • Music to my ears: Three exposures layered
to create mixed focus offerings? Cropped,
    erased bits, levels

  • Paranormal Activity:  Conducted with a light
saber that was actually red however changed
colour as it played to much with Welcome to
Hell with the submission and cropped apart
    from that as is.

  • Part Full:  Taken through Dobsonian
telescope on the “super moon” this month I
could only get this part moon due to a mad
rush in line to see through the viewfinder,
when I tried to get a perperdicular plane to
the viewfinder the blasted scope moved. Oh
well here is one of my brackets cropped down.

  • Phased out: Day after the super moon I tried
a timelapse of it rising over a few hours,
actually overnight as I feel to sleep and woke
at 5am in terror that it might of rained. There
is something about one climbing on a roof in
PJs at that hour that tells me this is getting
serious. The problem with this shoot is I came
down off the roof before landing metered
exposure or focus on the full moon which had
an adverse blurry effect, the timelapse can be
    seen if you click  here

  • ST5:  B&W conversion, cropped, sharpened.
One from a current photo job on the side.

  • Warp Speed: B&W Conversion, cropped,
boarder – taken with slow shutter into a light
source against my car with a rotation of the
    lens barrel.
