Dinner with Friends
Rightio man, I needed to choose this image because it certainly stood out from to pack in my
eyes, although there are better Christmasy shots in your selection - I still found this was the
image that really worked for me.
The composition and use of light really seem to all work with the mood of the night and
although you had everything working against you with retouching, cropping etc you still
managed to blow me out of the water with you score..
Other image notes in order of merit:
- Eyes on Santa, Yep this is another top shot a little to saturated but the eyes are really
memorising on both girls – close first.
- BB and Santa – I can see the difficulty faced with the exposure and it is a pity that we don’
t have Bridgette’s eyes in the lens too. Good shot of Santa – he is just a little dark on my
screen.
- Boxing Day BBQ, Good attempt of the Aussie in action. Love the darb – I don’t think I
have ever got my face that close to the BBQ before though? Perhaps to much going on
in the shot. Slight crop needed to cut white bits out too.
- Santa’s Sleigh, Nice enough grab of the bird, again a bit to punchy with the saturation.
- New Years Eve, would have been improved with you saying just prior “ Everybody look at
me and Cheers!”
- Xmas Tree - Doest do much for me - but I do get the xmas cheer.
Good effort this month mate

"Snowman"
I chose this shot because it had the
most "Christmas" feeling. The choice of
subject and background works well
together, but both are lacking punch.
Maybe a light source onto the
background would have assisted. DOF
looks about right, but I cannot find a
focus sweet spot - maybe too slow a
shutter?? I think you may have
saturated the reds which look OK, but I
think the greens could have used some
work too. To be picky, I would have
liked to the left side cropped too.
Hey.... The image is definitely
"Christmas"!!!
Other image notes in order of merit:
- Ballsy - Nice capture. Shit, if you
only had a "Santa" hat on.
Maybe some cropping of the
plates (or moving the bowl) would
have improved it. Really nice
natural looking colours though
- The Girls - Could have been a
winner..... I would probably put
this shot's failure down to a slow
lens (can't remember what you
have now) as it looks like you
were stretched for enough light
to nail it. Overall exposure looks
about right however. Appears
like a 1/12 exposure at maybe
f16 given the DOF, really glad
you weren't tempted to fire some
flash..... The background is
inconsequential here so an open
aperture and higher ISO would
have probably nailed it. The shot
does not need to be super crisp,
and noise would have been
acceptable, but more clarity and
contrast may have given it some
real spice. Lovely, lovely girls by
the way.
- Temptation - I just like this shot.
Nothing special, just a good
moment. Pity about the light
poles.
- Checkouts - The filtering works
well with a busy shot like this. I
would have liked the horizontal
plane addressed however.
- Tree Zoom - Top shot. Very well
exposed and steady through the
zoom movement.
- Bon Bons - I don't like crop here.
Not much to please the eye.
- Santa - Nup. DOF too shallow.
Not a lot of interest here.
All in all some nice shots, but I would
have loved to see some real Christmas
joy. Maybe I should have been there to
assist??
