Sean's submission notes:

I take my hat off to food photographers
after working through some of my staged
shots, it is much harder to make food look
inviting than you would think but thats
what I tried to do in my approach this
month.

Lighting, composition and generally
creating a natural feel most important.

Image notes:
Processed from RAW files with minimal
cropping as all staged.

Martin's submission notes:

OK Braaaaaz – stop submitting now. The wait is over.

You will see that I tried to get a more “raw” product
range rather than shots that may make one salivate.

In reality, I tried to get all food stages, but my
cookbook shots made me cringe…

I need some more frigging lighting.

Image notes – All cropped, curves, borders, sats and
colours, and anything else available.

Martin's Pick - score and comments:  "Cheese"

Easy one for me this month. I looked at your very shallow DOF collection and realised that you were trying to target the
taste buds and belly. Therefore I selected the one that presented as the most appetising to me. Whilst I then whittled it
down to three, the shot which had me running for the fridge was Cheese.

This shot would appeal those who are not real fans of cheese too. It is yummo full stop.

I do think the DOF could have been slightly deeper to at least get the stack of crackers front edge sharpy. Taken with
50mm??

Other shots in order of merit:

  • Souped Up – great ingredient display, nice lighting, focus point nice. Boil her up!!

  • Dinner - I wanted this to come in first as it my favourite fare...., but I could'nt really pick a focus point, and you
may have deliberately softened this.  Juuuust not pushing my buttons here.

  • Snacked out - Gonna be blunt here. WTF is that round thingy top right? In my opinion it ruins what could have
been a winner. I can taste that salami from here.

  • Fruits - Quirky. Like the processing. Nice props.

  • Pizza - Yup, bloody hungry right now.

  • Coffee - Not everyones cup of tea (ring the pun bell) but I am trying to see your vision here. So why is nothing
    sharp?

Other shots out of the mix, and I really didnt much care for Pastry...I was sure you were going to bring me some
tropical flavours. Where were the Mangoes and Lychees???

Sean's Pick - score and comments:  "Egg"

Interesting lot from you this month, I sort of understand your angle and approach with the topic, some may say a
little controversial but knowing you are visionary I guess I have to hang on for the ride.

I guess you get points straight off of thinking creatively about your theme and approach but I must say I did
have troubles looking at dirty pigs and seeing succulent pork chops, and we even used to breed them to eat but
hey I am working with you here..

Gotta say it was pretty easy for me, I noticed one of your subs straight up that evoked my attention and even I
thought I wish this was one of subs and this was
EGG!

I like the suspension of the yolk – deep contrast and cross light, could have been better if caught prior to hiding
behind the rim of the bowl and I am not that hot on the narrow long crop (perhaps a bit too longish) but certainly
plays the food line better than going completely dirty pig on me.

  • Second pick  (Local Produce) was also pretty easy and could have been first if had some form of
movement (cash in hand etc?) I like the balance of compartmentalized food to both sides of the image
and punch colours. Good shot for your kitchen wall.

Ok other shots in order of merit:

  • Discarded is a nice composition and yes was previously a consumed food item – its not going to make
me go out and buy a can of coke or anything though. Good suitable tones.

  • Staples – One of your better topic suited food shots, a little underdone for my liking, a rim light may have
    got me in more?

  • Beef – ok ok not sure I think of a juicy steak when I see these calves and I hope they could not read your
mind. That said yes their probable future will probably be on a plate but I think you may have grabbed this
    shot a little prematurely.

  • Dirty Pig / Bacon, please refer to Beef synopsis, poor piglets. They look much taster out of the oven..

  • Prickly Pear, I have actually eaten the fruit from this plant before, still recall the prickle experience well..
This un fruited specimen however doesn't have me licking my lips though and that’s why you are down
    here..
