Sean's Pick - score and comments: "Rock On"
Nice lot this month mate, looking at all those Brisbane city shots makes me miss the place a bit. I can see that you cruised your way through the
shoots with little effort which is something that is reflected with a common relaxed natural style.
My pick is “Rock On” basically because it is the best exposed shot that reads well for the topic and it has top composition. The low light capture
at high speed illustrates how good the D700 performs under these conditions.
Other photos in order of merit:
- Text - I almost chose this shot but ended up deciding that going HDR perhaps wasn’t needed although saying that I am not sure if you
would have pulled so much reflected light on the subjects face which works well. It’s a nice shot that sums up the vibe of mall life well but
not quite sharp enough for my liking.
- Walker - another nicely composed shot with great textural relief – the static and life aspect works well but something is lacking – don’t ask
me what perhaps a pigeon or a leaf blowing past would of added some more interest to keep me ranting on?
- Break dance - Not bad a bad attempt – I can see you have used the same studio to work in and have caught the dramatic move at the
right time but perhaps if you didn’t cut the subjects hands off I would have graded this one higher. Good crowd interest well caught – I can
see you were a good ghost.
- City Cycles - I like the way my eyes are pulled down the windrow of bikes and I can clearly read the interest of the idea / concept you were
chasing. I think this shot would have been improved if you waited or paid a chump to grab one of the bikes further down the end too add
the human factor & block the blank billboard.
- News agents - seen you do this shot before – a bit to busy for me bud and hard to read.
- Lamplight - nothing much to report here probably too much vertical happenings or a bit over cramped? Nice quality of light though.

Martin's Pick - score and comments: "At peace"
Well, well, well. Someone has got their hands on a top notch machine and first rate glass. About frigging time. Now I can really
unleash on my evals as there is no excuse to provide below par images.....
A pleasantly difficult choice for top spot this month. Discounting the 50% of the Markets shots, the variety was not too bad. I
would have loved to see some poor light, high ISO shots in the mix to see how you are handling the new found freedom. Early
days I guess, and you are probably still finding your feet with the new toy.
My pick for this month is At-peace. Great composition with the other musos framing the subject, and near perfect exposure.
Colour saturation and hue also looks spot on. Nothing overly remarkable here, just a moment in time well captured and
presented.
Other image notes in order of merit:
- Fight-Club-Alley-colour – Text book street shot with nice angles and good foreground and background interest. A Bum
with the shiiite kicked out of him could have added flavour. I'm really glad you did'nt desaturate this one. Click print.
- Resting-mirror - Great subject matter. I think if this guy was shopped onto the fight club image then there would be a
clear winner. Not so sure about the point of view. Maybe a little lower would have improved the human factor?? Nice lab
work.
- Turkeys – I really like this shot, and very nearly picked it as the winner. I love the depth of field. That dude with the lunger
really nails it. I really don't like the overall composition however, and that was a crucial player in this months challenge.
- Connection – Terrific exposure. Too busy for me, and what may be the interest point in the cage is not evident.
- Mothman – I'm really trying to like this shot.... But it's just not working for me
- Back-there - Yeah it's OK.... But unremarkable.
- Kiss - If he was goping her, if the ute was'nt there, if your point of view was a little left, if it was sharper...... Then maybe.
OK thats nine images on eval. NFQ. Pretty damn good job, but I will refrain from blowing wind up your arrrshe.
Lets see how the D700 handles a little hot stuff for November. Get out the spectroscope and shoot some RED.
